How to Sell Tunisia to Clients Who Have Never Heard of It

Tunisia is the most underestimated destination in North Africa. Here is how to position it, what objections to expect and how to build a programme that converts first-timers into advocates.

Of all the destinations GalaVoyages operates, Tunisia generates the most consistent pattern: clients who visit are surprised, impressed and immediately evangelical about it to their networks. The problem is getting them there in the first place.

Tunisia has a name recognition problem. Ask most Asian travellers to locate Tunisia on a map and many will struggle. Ask them to name something they associate with Tunisia and the answers reveal the gap: "the Sahara?" (correct, but only a fraction), "isn't that near Libya?" (true, but irrelevant) or a blank.

This guide is about closing that gap — turning Tunisia from an unfamiliar name on a brochure into a destination your clients are genuinely excited to visit.

Why Tunisia Deserves More Than It Gets

Tunisia punches far above its weight in terms of what it offers per day of travel. Consider what a 4-night programme delivers:

Five UNESCO-grade experiences in four days, within a compact geography that makes every transfer efficient. This density of extraordinary content is almost unmatched at this price point anywhere in the world.

The Objections You Will Face — and How to Answer Them

"Is it safe?"

This is the first and most persistent objection, and it requires a direct, confident answer — not a deflection.

Tunisia has invested significantly in tourism security since 2015. The country has a dedicated tourism police force, high hotel security standards and a government that has made tourism infrastructure a national priority. Tunis's medina, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said and Kairouan are mature, well-managed tourist destinations with no meaningful security incidents in recent years.

The practical answer: Tunisia receives millions of European tourists annually — French, German, Italian and British. If safety were genuinely problematic, these markets (with sophisticated, risk-aware travel advisories) would not be present in such volume. The perception gap for Asian markets is a function of distance and unfamiliarity, not reality.

"No one in my network has been there"

This is actually an opportunity rather than an obstacle. Tunisia is genuinely novel. Your clients will return as the first in their circle to have discovered it — and that social distinction is exactly what aspirational travellers seek. Position it explicitly: "Be the first among your friends to explore one of the ancient world's great civilisations."

"Is there enough to do?"

This objection reveals a common misconception — that North Africa is primarily "desert." Address it with specificity: Carthage is one of the greatest archaeological sites in the world. The Bardo Museum's mosaic collection is genuinely world-class. Sidi Bou Said is as photogenic as Santorini. Kairouan is one of the Arab world's holiest cities. There is, demonstrably, more than enough.

How to Structure the Programme

The 3-Night Core

Tunisia's core circuit works exceptionally well as a 3-night extension from any European hub — or as a standalone 4-day programme for operators in markets with direct or near-direct connectivity to Tunis-Carthage Airport.

This programme is compact, high-density and genuinely surprising. The challenge is helping clients understand what they are going to see before they arrive.

The 7-Night Extended Programme

For operators who want to sell Tunisia as a primary destination rather than an extension, the 7-night programme adds the Saharan south (Tozeur, Chott el-Djerid salt lake) and the island of Djerba (coastal resort, Jewish heritage quarter, traditional crafts village). This creates a genuinely complete Tunisian experience.

The Photography Argument

For content-driven travellers, Sidi Bou Said alone is worth the trip. The blue-and-white clifftop village above the Gulf of Tunis is consistently one of the most shared travel images from North Africa — it has a visual identity as strong as Santorini but with a fraction of the crowds. Kairouan's Great Mosque, the mosaic galleries of Bardo, the medina's narrow arched passages — every stop produces compelling images.

GalaVoyages in Tunisia

GalaVoyages has operated from our Tunis office since 2010. In 2024 we handled 5,000 pax in Tunisia. All programmes are operated directly — no subcontracting, direct supplier relationships with hotels, guide companies and transport providers. Our Tunis team arranges private medina dinners, after-hours access to archaeological sites and artisan workshop visits not available through general tour operators. Tour Leader always FOC. White-label available.

"The Bardo Museum alone changed how I think about what Roman civilisation achieved. I came expecting sand dunes and left with a completely different understanding of Tunisia."
